2009 Idea Lab Projects
Connecting Abilities
Recipient: Morgan Green
Award: $1000
This project will be a collaborative exhibition between OSU Arts Scholars, student artists and Art Bridge Studio artists from United Cerebral Palsy of Central Ohio, with an interactive showcase of adaptive tools used for art-making by artists with disabilities with a goal of raising awareness and promoting a wider focus of abilities over disabilities.
Pedal Power For the People
Recipient: Alex Hissong
Award: $1000
With the help of Engineers for Community Service, Third Hand Bike Coop, and the Department of Welding Engineering, Pedal Powered People is making pedal powered technology to benefit the local community and raise interest in designing technology for developing nations. Three teams of students plan to design and build a pedal powered generator, blender, and washing machine out of recycled bike parts. These machines will then be on display on the Oval, at Earth Day activities and in the OSU Urban Arts Space.

Student Farm at OSU
Recipient: Constance Rice
Award: $2000
A diverse group of students, staff, and faculty at OSU is planning a new student-run teaching and research farm at the existing Waterman Agriculture and Natural Resources Laboratory. The group includes a student organization called Students for Food Sovereignty, faculty and staff in Horticulture and Crop Science, Entomology, Rural Sociology, and Leadership and Program Evaluation, and community partner Metro High School. This project will establish a 1/2 acre organic garden plot at the Waterman Agriculture and Natural Resources Laboratory to be sustained by students. The project will help interested parties gather the skills, tools, and supplies necessary to keep the garden going throughout the summer. The group plans to hold at least one large event to mark the beginning of the season of the student farm, such as a planting party and may hold a produce stand at the OSU Urban Arts Space or another food and farming-related event to serve the downtown community.
Storytelling Across the Arts
Recipient: KC Wolfe
Award: $2000
Over the course of eight to ten weeks, students representing the MFA programs in both Creative Writing and Visual Art will be solicited and paired by the OSU Writers’ Guild for an interdisciplinary project on conversation and the arts with a focus on narrative. Artists from each program will meet and collaborate on complimentary pieces to be shown and judged at an end of year reception, which will include a storytelling contest of local writers.
