BIGG Artist: Andrew Newbold
Artist Statement
In recent years, the urban industrial environment has heavily influenced my work. Job opportunities and creative research have led to time spent in several factories. Some of the factories I have experienced manufacture glass objects at an impressive scale and rate. Interesting objects and processes exist within this manufactured landscape. I attempt to recreate objects and atmosphere with my own materials and process. In "The Stack", a repetitive curved form is used like a building block or Lincoln Log. The individual curved pieces are achieved through a process of blowing a long glass bubble into a sculpted metal mold. In "Glass Containers", a combination of bent glass and formed metal cones are combined to create a composition that evokes a precarious balancing act. The objects become visually weightless and begin to hover. Using glass as a form maker, objects become multi-dimensional. Negative space is revealed. Through this translation the objects represented are given new life. Hopefully, experiencing the work, relates to the feeling one gets in a place where the composition of the landscape, the identity of the objects within it, and a specific light quality, provide a significant moment that leaves a lasting imprint, a resonance of experience and place.
