BIGG Artist: Ditte Johansson
Artist Statement
I have a Master of Art in Fiberart but during the last ten years I have been working with glass. My procedure is based on materials but all my artistic work is built on thoughts and ideas. The exhibition situation/room is very important according to me since I want to create an entirety with my separate glass objects. In many of the projects I’ve been working with my intension has been to try to transfer the feeling of presence from the textile material to the more anonymous glass. I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different materials and qualities of glass to find evolvable ideas and interesting expressions. One of the projects is called "Textile glass". It’s one of my own techniques I have developed in which I process glass-wool with textile techniques and thereafter burning it in a kiln until everything but the glass has melted. I think that the most interesting part of "Textile glass" is that it becomes a unique mix in between Glass and Textile. Another thing that catches me about glass and textile is their traditions. I think about the amount of knowledge and experience in the craft but also about the heaviness that old traditions possess. I think that the substance in the traditions in contrast to the heaviness is fascinating and gives me a lot of material to work with. My latest solo exhibition was called "Paused". The title refers to frozen moments but also to level when the two traditions/materials meets in the process and becomes something new.
