CBUS Sound Project Symposium

Saturday, August 8, 2009 - 1:30pm - 7:00pm

The CBUS Sound Project Symposium is a celebration of Columbus Music. In conjunction with our Idea Lab program, this day of learning and performance includes panels on booking, promoting, and community organizing. Complimentary hand-roasted coffee is generously provided by local purveyor, Cafe Brioso. Free and open to all.

AMANDA ANDERSON  |  Anderson has lived in Clintonville her whole life and can't imagine living anywhere else. She attended Capital University, majoring in Music Industry and Vocal Performance, and also attended the Recording Workshop in Chillicothe during the Summer of 2003.  Amanda has been working with Wild Goose Creative as their booking coordinator since 2007.

TODD DUGAN  |  Dugan manages Rumba Cafe.

PAUL PAINTER  |  Painter is a founding member of the band Cowboy Hillbilly Hippy Folk and booking person for Victorians Midnight Cafe.

JASON QUICKSALL  |  Quicksall is a local singer/songwriter  and sound engineer at The Rumba Cafe.  He also runs The Cowtown Round, a songwriters' showcase for local and touring acts.

WES FLEXNER  |  Flexner writes occasionally for the Columbus Alive and regularly for donewaiting.com. He is also an expert on Columbus graffitti, hip-hop, and Djs.

ALEX KELLEY  |  For 11 years Alex created marketing and public relations campaigns for the advertising, design, nonprofit, publishing, real estate, and retail industries before launching her own business, Alexandra477, in March of 2009. She writes about music for Columbus Underground, founded and manages the Goodale Park Music Series, helps organize Pecha Kucha Columbus, and sits on the board of the Short North Foundation.

JOEL OLIPHINT  |  Oliphint started out on the copy desks of the Naples Daily News and the Columbus Dispatch, then spent a couple of years at Columbus Monthly. Since 2007 he has regularly written for local alt-weekly The Other Paper on a freelance basis and has also contributed to SPIN, Blurt and PasteMagazine.com. In July he was named Columbus editor of music blog donewaiting.com.

VAL GLENN, TIME AND TEMPERATURE  |  The dedicated pursuit of her music has taken Val out of Columbus and back again.  Since 2005, she has been performing locally and recording as Time and Temperature.  Christopher Animalhead describes her work as "singer/songwriter music for people who are sick to death of singer/songwriter music."

5:20 - 6:10   Community Organizing Discussion with Q & A

JEN BURTON  |  Burton has been a community organizer in San Francisco and now Columbus since 2001. She has hosted and curated a multitude of events including the 47/Shepherd Fairey premiere party with DJ Spooky and the much loved  Maximum June.

TONY ENVELOPE COLLINGER  |  Envelope, signed to Weightless Recordings, is one of Columbus' most loved hometown MCs and true community organizer.

ERIN MOORE  |  Moore is the Executive Director of the Columbus Music Co-op (CMC), a group that assists Columbus musicians without health insurance who are experiencing health-related financial hardship, and works with other Columbus organizations to promote the Columbus music community.

CHAD SHEPHERD  |  Shepherd has been an organizer in the Columbus underground scene for over 10 years. He started at Milo, moved onto BLD, and now directs exhibitions and books music shows for the Shelf as part of Skylab.

MATTE BLACK SILHOUETTES | This four-piece is a shadowbox of sound, made from the rusted fingertips of old rock and roll rhythms and heavy blues beats then sewn together with scrap pieces found in the underground. From small town oppression to dirty city landscapes, Matte Black Silhouettes have been searching for their muse only to find a playground of misadventure and the creation subtle roar.
