Marotta Hour: L.A. Jenkins

Thursday, September 17, 2009 - 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Stay downtown after work every third Thursday of the month and check out new sounds curated by local musician and international composer Larry Marotta.

This month's Marotta Hour features the ethereal guitar stylings of Columbus native L.A. Jenkins.

Originally a self-taught guitarist, Jenkins eventually studied music composition–specifically the harmolodic approach ala Ornette Coleman–at Eastern New Mexico University. Compositionally his work follows in the legacy of Anthony Braxton, James Brown, Bill Frisell, Bill Laswell, Leroy Jenkins, Ornette Coleman, Phillip Glass, and David Torn.

Jenkins wishes “to advance the ideal of artistic freedom being unhindered by cultural assumptions about the individual and enforced as limiting expectations as it relates to categories and genre.”

He has performed with various groups across the U.S., including collaborations with Tatsuya Nakatani, Tom Abbs, Michael Cary, Gary Thompson and Ryan Jewell. In the past year he has released two albums, Man Danced Funny and Inability to Fly (Ice Recoding Company).

“…it delivers a fully formed statement of purpose. Jenkins has an encyclopedic knowledge of music stored in his brain and can seemingly call forth phrases and styles at will…This is quite a find.” Of Inability to Fly
