Theatre 981 Theatrical Performance Art Stage/Studio: Space Transformed | Winter 2009 | Associate Professor Maureen Ryan
In pursuit of our mission and our initiatives to integrate curriculum into the programming at the OSU Urban Arts Space, Associate Professor Maureen Ryan of the Department of Theatre brought her MFA acting students downtown for the final five weeks of the course, TH981 Theatrical Performance Art. The students, who were in the final two quarters of their three-year graduate program, spent the first five weeks of the course constructing and performing personal artistic manifestos. They had been assigned the task of considering themselves avant-garde artists who were charged with the challenge of becoming the innovative and vital theatrical artists of the future. The manifesto performances were video taped and shown at UAS in conjunction with a performance/installation that the MFA actors gave in the space.  The MFAs rehearsed site-specific work at the UAS for five weeks and then gave a public performance on Friday, March 13th. The performance pieces were based on the aesthetic they had put forth in their manifestos and in response to the upper gallery at the Space. The Theatre Research Institute (TRI) had an exhibit running concurrently in the upper gallery and the students made performance pieces in response to that exhibit or created found-object installations in the space and responded to those. After the performances were completed the found-object installations along with the videotaped manifestos remained in the space as the exhibition Stage/Studio: Space Transformed. The actors created and rehearsed the pieces during the Space’s normal hours of operation and the general public was invited to view the rehearsal process.  The students then assisted in the process of restoring the Space.

Law 636 Disability Discrimination | Fall 2008 | Adjunct Faculty Scott Lisner

This course primarily covers the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Students learned about Title I (employment discrimination), Title II (public entity discrimination) and Title III (public accommodation discrimination) under the ADA. Brief attention was also given to constitutional issues, special education issues and housing discrimination issues.  In addition, students learned how to conduct an accessibility audit. For 2009, a group of students worked with the OSU Urban Arts Space to make recommendations for how to make the Space more accessible. This was a very unusual opportunity and gave students the chance to make meaningful contributions to the arts community.
