Through May 11, 2012, any Ohio high school age artist was able to apply to participate in the exhibition. The 2012 High School Juried Exhibition at the OSU Urban Arts Space will give high school students an opportunity to showcase their work alongside working artists. Student artists' work will be displayed with the help of Urban Arts Space staff, trained exhibitions coordinators, and curators. Students will have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the gallery business. Students will learn many crucial skills of art installation and promotion, and will have their artwork viewed by a broader audience to evoke greater awareness for the talent of young artists and garner respect from the public eye.It is not uncommon today for high schools to place lower priority on the arts than academics or athletics. Many schools are often unable to provide students with the comprehensive experience needed to successfully progress in the demanding professional art world, either due to curricular restrictions or a simple lack of funds and resources. While a high school art program can provide basic tools in technique and the creative processes, most programs cannot emphasize real world application of these skills after graduation. As a young artist, it can be difficult to find substantial footing when caught in the void between “juvenile daydreams” and the expectations of the professional art world. The same struggle has restricted prior generations of professional artists in their youth. Let us not repeat the past, but instead create new challenges with exhibitions such as the 2012 High School Juried Exhibition.About the Columbus BicentennialOSU Urban Arts Space is proud to be a part of 200Columbus helping celebrate 200 years of our great city with the 2012 High School Juried Exhibition.
