Reception
Friday, August 20, 2010 4-6PM
See the work that comprises City Center's second exhibition, Apparition/The Styrofoam Symphony. The exhibition showcases two City Center proposals that each expose the effects of human activities— mass consumption (The Styrofoam Symphony) and visual perception (Apparition)— on daily living.
The Styrofoam Symphony is a sound installation conceived of and produced by the collaboration among four Columbus artists— Sloan Coffin and Todd Pleasants with John Also Bennett and Ian Keller. With sound compositions inspired by the alarming statistics of Styrofoam production, the installation uses Styrofoam as the medium and conceptual drive to bring about issues such as mass consumption, the environment, and public naivety.
Apparition, featuring the work of AJ Fusco, showcases abstract graphite drawings and manipulated digital imagery, often through pixilation and blurring, that challenges the viewer's perception. Fusco uses ambiguity to expose the limitations of human perception as an informative tool.
AJ Fusco's Artist Statement
The ambiguity of the image serves as a metaphor for the way the limitations of our visual sense inform our perception of the world; when confronted with unfamiliar visual data we cannot help but impose patterns and meaning where there are none. Like the drawings, the corrupted images make use of spatial ambiguity, as well as distortions of the human body. The works draw an analogy between glitches in digital files and the imperfection of human consciousness: the way the representation of the world is formed through the glossy compression techniques employed by our sense organs.
The Styrofoam Symphony Artist Statement
The Styrofoam Symphony is a collaborative project that combines the visions of four Columbus based artists: Todd Pleasants, Sloan Coffin, John Also Bennett and Ian Keller. Taking inspiration from experimental noise, music, DIY construction, and electronics, the Styrofoam sound installation culminates four unique perspectives on art and music.
Todd Pleasants is a sculptural installation artist and musician. He currently studies environmental art at Columbus College of Art and Design.
Sloan Coffin is studying industrial design at Columbus College of Art and Design. His work explores the harmony of technology and form.
John Also Bennett is a sound and performance artist, and independent curator. He is currently completing a BA in Comparative Culture Studies at The Ohio State University.
Ian Keller graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design in 2010 with a concentration on sculpture. Currently, he is the sculpture lab technician at CCAD.
The reception for this exhibition is free and open to all. Light refreshments will be provided. Catered by local businesses.
