Drive-By Shootings takes place in The Arts Initiative's City Center Gallery located in the Lazarus building, January 14-31, 2014.
Columbus Street Photographer, Leah Fisher, captures 1/4,000th of a second of the people's lives we pass everyday. With the help of a driver, Fisher travels around the city "shooting" subjects from the passenger seat of her car. The result, after careful selection and editing, are images that tell a story about the city of Columbus.
Fisher prefers to shoot from a moving car because she says "The images are more candid, most people don't notice passing cars when walking on the street. When most people see a camera pointed at them, they change their demeanor to portray a certain look." By driving, Fisher immerses herself in Columbus' most common mode of transportation. It allows her to see all sides of the city which would be impossible on foot, the traditional method of street photography.
Fisher deliberately captures moments in time with layers of familiarity, comparisons, and questions but never a real truth. Neither the viewer nor the artist knows the strangers in the photographs and from 1/4000th of a second, all that can be derived about their lives are assumptions. Sometimes the subjects themselves offer clues to their story, and sometimes their inadvertent interaction with the background tells its own story. Drive-By Shootings summarizes Columbus in a few hours, of many months, over several years, whenever Fisher drives by.
Please visit City Center Gallery and see all sides of this town through the eyes and the lens of Leah Fisher. See more of Leah Fisher's photography.
