An entrepreneurial spirit and thinking therefore seems to define today's generation and post-recession era, which is evident in Columbus through the thriving scenes of food trucks, pop-up stores, public art, and ever-growing local movements. These tenets of imagination and resourcefulness lead Tim Lai and Eliza Ho of ALTernative (the creative minds behind the exhibition) to ask: how do these ideas relate to the field of design and architecture? What kind of design is relevant to this trying time?Featuring four conceptual ideas for potential projects located in Columbus neighborhoods, this exhibition explores the way in which creative design responds to the essence of this moment. All projects are small-scale, low budget, and highly adaptable to different situations and locations. Each of them aims to create environments that transform the area and enhance the vitality of the neighborhood. The first project imagines a transformation of a long-abandoned theater building through the use of a creative mural. The second proposes a bird sanctuary to enliven an underpass. The third experiments with a new concept café that combines street food and communal, urban dining experiences. And the last project envisions a series of planters and benches combined to strengthen the area’s artistic reputation and beautify its streetscape.About ALTernativeALT is a non-profit organization established to promote purposeful design that benefits the Clintonville community and other Columbus neighborhoods. In bad economic times, people have to be more creative. An entrepreneurial spirit and thinking therefore seems to define today's generation and post-recession era, which is evident in Columbus through the thriving scenes of food trucks, pop-up stores, public art, and ever-growing local movements.
