The exhibition incorporates numerous themes important to contemporary art, including Pop Art and Conceptualism, the Pictures Generation, performance art and the Abject Body, California Conceptualism, Minimalism, German Pop and European art since the 1980s, identity politics, and portraiture and self-portraiture. The collection is intertwined with social issues of the contemporary world, including race, gender, technology, education, philanthropy, communication, and ethics. Full Curator's ThemesThe majority of Open This End is on display at Urban Arts Space, downtown, while Hopkins Hall Gallery features the work Jimmy Carter by Jennifer Steinkamp. As a part of the artists collective, Group Material, Gonzalez-Torres contributed to community education and awareness during the AIDS epidemic in the 80’s and 90’s. His works frequently incorporate ideas of comfort, intimacy, loneliness, or loss while using audience participation to complete them.
