Using organic cotton and repurposing cloth, found clothing and linens, Cavanaugh presents hand-stitched pieces that are created using variations on the Japanese dying technique of shibori.Collating the universal and minuscule scope of "wonder" with the routine, ethic and momentum behind "work", this exhibition seeks to visualize the sense of possibility that occurs when the two elements are combined. Whether Cavanaugh's fabric forms are layered, ethereal or grand, each work has a transparency that exposes the artist's gesture in intimate detail.Often created by tightly gathering large swaths of fabric with thread, painting on dye, and then releasing the fabric, Cavanaugh's works develop organically with their own idiosyncrasies, mimicking the natural processes that inspire Cavanaugh's aesthetic approach.Cavanaugh is well known for her inventive basket and vessel quilt works, for which she was commissioned by the Ohio Arts Council to create a series of works for the 2006 Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio. Since then, Cavanaugh's work has transformed through experience, experimentation, and a 2012 GCAC Dresden residency to become more free-form, expansive, and site specific, though her work is still informed by her travels and wonder of the simplicity and magnitude of nature.
