About City Center Gallery
City Center Gallery is an opportunity for emerging artists to display their art and launch their careers. Operated and juried by Ohio State students from arts and non-arts disciplines, City Center Gallery awards to selected artists or artist groups. Chosen exhibition proposals will result in a month-long exhibition located in the corridor space at the entrance of Urban Arts Space. By assisting artists in the Columbus community, The Arts Initiative City Center Gallery hopes to be known as a destination for both artists and residents of the state of Ohio.
City Center Gallery Mission and Goals
1 | Foster independent art
Housed in the heart of downtown Columbus, City Center Gallery deepens the city’s exposure to a vibrant emerging artistic culture. Developing artists are able to use this venue to showcase their work through exhibitions, performances and public programs. The investigation of principles and interests is supported to advance the growth of contemporary art.
2 | Provide professional experience
Through hands-on experiences, artists and student assistants together gain practiced skills and working knowledge of gallery functions. Undergraduate students administer the operation of the gallery, including selecting, organizing, curating, and marketing exhibitions. Artists work with gallery directors to curate their own exhibit, gaining experience in understanding how the presentation of their work is experienced by the public.
3 | Bridge the community
City Center Gallery increases access in the Columbus community to local artists. The gallery promotes the exploration of visual expression as a form of cultural and communal evaluation through artists talks, workshops, and other community engagement.
Three OSU Urban Arts Space student assistants founded City Center Gallery in the spring of 2010 with the hope of providing emerging local artists with the opportunity to realize their ideas and showcase their creative work in downtown Columbus. Located in what was previously the Lazarus department store, City Center Gallery expands the public corridor into a space accessible to our creative community. By assisting local artists, the OSU Urban Arts Space hopes to be recognized as an artistic destination for the growing city of Columbus, Ohio.
