Our Internship Program offers Ohio State students the opportunity to gain comprehensive arts nonprofit experience and participate in the operations of the university’s premier downtown Urban Arts Space and on-campus Hopkins Hall Gallery. Guided by our professional staff, interns assist in advancing the mission of Urban Arts Space, focusing on the internal delivery of Urban Arts Space and Hopkins Hall Gallery's exhibitions, programming and events. Interns support daily operations as integral members of our staff through a combination of learning experiences, hands-on projects and group collaborations. Interns participate in daily tasks and activities, contribute skills and ideas and produce excellent work, all while developing the necessary skillsets to become the next generation of arts, nonprofit and cultural experts and leaders. Additional internship benefits include: professional development opportunities; networking opportunities with contacts in the field; peer-to-peer networking; and career counseling, as applicable.
Urban Arts Space offers a variety of roles that provide hands-on internship experience. Every position at Urban Arts Space is integral in supporting general gallery operations. The student teams provide support in specialized focus areas with guidance and direction from a small team of professional staff. In addition to individual focus areas, all student interns are expected to be familiar with the general operations, requirements and expectations of Urban Arts Space. This includes:
- gallery receptions and gallery monitoring
- serving docents for exhibitions
- program and event set up and management
- basic customer service responsibilities
Most importantly, applicants should be passionate about advancing the arts!
What to Expect
Urban Arts Space fosters a work culture that is open, interesting, creative and challenging. Our first priority is to provide excellent customer service and create a friendly and welcoming experience for all guests. Teamwork plays an integral role to facilitate exhibitions and programming in the galleries. All staff will have the opportunity to learn skills, even ones outside of their assigned roles. As a team, members help with all aspects of gallery operations. We require high levels of self-motivation for this internship. We cultivate active learning and hands-on implementation of projects throughout the internship, with a specific focus on projects that can be shared as part of future career exploration.
Hours are flexible and depend on assignments and availability. Students typically work 10-20 hours per week at Urban Arts Space or Hopkins Hall Gallery. Interested applicants need to be available during regular gallery hours (Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays until 8 p.m.) as well as some evening and weekend hours for events and programs.
