bending to reverse, reversing to extend
over the time, under the skin
a world suspends, an inhale floats
connection asks; what to catch
and how to preserve
surface detangles the streams
potential within detailed simplicity
confusion elucidates,
what velocity illudes
following what the smell promises
in the fold of leading tenderness
one’s own recollection is one’s own reality
curving the under
half-way through
permanent transitory

How does space enable and enliven body memory? What is the body’s strategy to extend itself and harness nostalgia in a particular space?
Inspired by the recent stay-at-home orders, accessing what is at-hand, we explore ideas from Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space and Sara Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology, negotiating the body’s capacity to extend and orient to a domestic space through physical and kinesthetic agency as well as psychological and spiritual inquiry. As an ongoing process, this collaborative project is researching the complexity of memory by taking a close look at representation of sensation through sound and video.
Hopkins Hall Gallery Summer Series features short-term projects including performances, installations, audience-participatory work, and public programs or activities by Ohio State University graduate students.
