Sound and Fury Signifying...
Jess Hughes and Sean Naughton
On view at Hopkins Hall Gallery
Jess Hughes and Sean Naughton are devoting a year to working with Macbeth as a foundational text to explore power dynamics, the dangers of heteronormativity, and the pursuit of love. They will create three pieces as they experiment with how they are co-constructing creative spaces and performances with one another and with their audiences.
In this first exploration, Sound and Fury Signifying…, Hughes and Naughton will focus on the aftermath of the witch’s prophecy, which awakened the tendency for tyranny that lurked within Macbeth. Through immersion and participation, the performers and the audience will be challenged to confront their own capacity for tyranny and consider how they are puppets of tyrannical forces.
Hughes and Naughton are interested in deconstructing Shakespeare’s text in an effort to excavate new stories, discover new connections, and superimpose new frames. Special attention will be given to how technology is used to manipulate space and movement: sound will be amplified, text will be repeated, found objects will be magnified, and images will be projected. The performance will be designed to make the audience consider when they are in control, when they are giving up control, and why. They will be invited to speak, contribute to the soundscape, move, play, touch, listen, sit, and experience sensory deprivation.
The performance of Sound and Fury Signifying… is presented in partnership with Urban Arts Space's Hybrid Arts Lab, a multi-venue learning lab that experiments with how art is imagined, made, viewed and understood.
