Artist Commune presents For Us: A Function, an event at Rich Street Records centered around music, memory, and the feeling of summertime finally starting. Inspired by traditional Memorial Day cookouts, family functions, being outside all day, music playing through speakers, and the pool finally opening for the summer, this gathering is about the way communities mark the beginning of summer together. There is something specific about that feeling, everybody outside again, grills going, old songs coming back around, kids running around, people dancing, laughing too loud, sitting in lawn chairs for hours, reconnecting, resting, and feeling free, even if just for a moment.

This event treats music as memory. Hip hop, R&B, soul, house, funk, and sampled music all hold stories, emotions, and history that connect generations of people to each other. Through DJs, crate digging, collaborative listening sessions, and conversation, we want people to slow down and really sit with music, where it comes from, what it reminds us of, and how sound shapes the way we remember people, places, summers, relationships, and versions of ourselves.
A big part of the night is rooted in the culture around passing music down. Digging through records, hearing songs your parents played, recognizing samples, putting somebody onto a track they never heard before, all of that is part of cultural memory. Music has always been a way for us to document our lives, celebrate ourselves, process grief, create joy, and build community with each other.
For Us: A Function is really about that feeling. A space to be together, listen to good music, dance, rest, reconnect, and celebrate the ways communities continue to create culture, memory, softness, and freedom through sound and community. This special Artist Commune will set the tone for our summer exhibitions at Urban Arts Space, where we’ll celebrate making authentic connections through art.
Artist Commune is a recurring event hosted by Urban Arts Space that allows artists and the community to come together to create art, discuss art, and network.
