A Meaningful Career: The Legacy of Peter Megert
If you're fortunate enough to visit the Peter Megert Memorial Exhibition on the campus of The Ohio State University this autumn, you may think that its purpose is simply to showcase highlights from the career of a Swiss designer and educator. This assumption is not incorrect, though it is a bit too narrow. The exhibition is a tightly composed, sequentially organized celebration of Megert's accumulated achievements using Swiss Modern design principles to present its phases. It even pays homage to his ever-present life partner, the ceramicist Ursula Megert. Yet, it is much more.
Having been lucky enough to meet regularly with the "Peter Megert Legacy Group" that planned the exhibition's content and design for more than a year, it is easy to see that it is a fitting tribute to a man who obviously made a positive impression on many who crossed his path in the classroom or served as a colleague or client for more than 50 years. But this exhibition is not an overly sentimental retrospective... it as an analysis of a recipe for career success, especially if success is defined by the establishment of a meaningful legacy rather than mere financial achievement. My takeaway from the exhibition is that while the excellence of the design work shown is obvious, a more nuanced reading of the Megerts' story offers many valuable lessons for anyone interested in developing an impactful career.
