Reimagining Arts Internships as Community Learning
“I want to ensure interns know how to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions when it comes to their careers, and that they have resources to move forward.” — Ashley Martin
We’re proud to formally introduce Ashley Martin, Urban Arts Space’s new Internship Program Coordinator! Ashley is an educator, artist, and community advocate who previously worked with the Columbus Urban League and All People Arts, in addition to being the Director of Operations for J.U.S.T. (Justice, Unity, & Social Transformation).
In her first few months at Urban Arts Space, she’s already developed an interactive and insightful syllabus for our new community externship program funded by the Mellon Foundation. Ohio State students will spend one semester at UAS gaining hands-on experience in gallery operations. For their second semester, interns will be placed at a community site, applying their skills and knowledge from UAS.
Current intern Ky Smiley sat down with Ashley to discuss the new program. Read the full interview on Arts at Ohio State!
If you’re an Ohio State student interested in interning with us, keep an eye on this page for our next open call for the two-semester program! We’ll be hiring later this fall for Spring 2025.
