Hybrid Arts Lab AU20 Engagement Update

Dear Friends,

As we wrap-up the autumn semester, we write to thank our community of art makers, supporters, faculty and students for their contributions to the Hybrid Arts Lab pilot—it has been truly rewarding to witness the vibrancy and resiliency of the arts at Ohio State through your partnership. We hope you will take a moment to review highlights from Hybrid Arts Lab's inaugural semester in our full summary

"What it would look like if we experimented with how art is imagined, made, viewed and understood?"

The Hybrid Arts Lab pilot sought to engage new ways of arts teaching, learning and creating across our indoor, outdoor and online venues:

  • Hopkins Hall Gallery supplemented the classroom experience and presented experiential arts programs on campus
  • Stillman Hall Tent—one of three new temporary ASC tents—created opportunities to teach and create outside of traditional spaces.
  • UAS from Home supported the development of new online exhibitions, performances, conversations and interactive activities

Throughout this inaugural Autumn '20 semester, Hybrid Arts Lab provided direct support to nearly 800 unique students, faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences—advancing 44 unique arts learning and creative experiences.

Art makers and researchers embraced the spirit of Hybrid Arts Lab by exploring new ways of integrating and sharing their creative activity, teaching and research—oftentimes with programs that spanned multiple Hybrid Arts Lab venues. Further, several traditional classroom experiences were translated into new in-person and/or online exhibitions. The team at Urban Arts Space also enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with strategies to deepen learning through online arts presentation, virtual walkthroughs, interviews with collaborators and more.

We are pleased to share that Hybrid Arts Lab will return in January with a new season of experimental and collaborative projects from ASC students, faculty and staff! While Stillman Hall Tent will be de-installed for the winter, we are excited to host Hybrid Arts Lab at Urban Arts Space, Hopkins Hall Gallery and UAS online.
