Hybrid Arts Lab: SURFACE/SKIN/SIGHT
SURFACE/SKIN/SIGHT
By Esther Pittinger, UAS Writing Intern
At Ohio State, we are fortunate to have incredibly talented and passionate faculty in the arts. Several exhibitions recently displayed in-person at Hopkins Hall Gallery and online through the Hybrid Arts Lab displayed just as much, and showed how powerful art can be when people of different perspectives and backgrounds come together to create a poignant visual conversation about a single topic.
Our final exhibition this season, SURFACE/SKIN/SIGHT showcases the work of students from Carmel Buckley’s from Advanced Sculpture and Gina Osterloh's Advanced Photo courses. Their multi-media works explore how sight and visuality impact one’s sense of identity and belonging. Spanning from photography to sculpture to video to printmaking, these different works all come together in a compelling discussion about the possibilities of an autonomous self and the ability of an artist to create portrayals of the self that deviate from pervasive social codes and binaries.
Though the in-person exhibition of SURFACE/SKIN/SIGHT took place in Hopkins Hall Gallery earlier this semester, the online exhibition will be available from December 1-30 on the Urban Arts Space website.
