What We Talk About When We Talk About Love
Digital Painting, 2020, 1444x1926 pixels (and other varied sizes)
What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is inspired by Raymond Carver’s short story of the same name. It features 30 pages of hand drawn art depicted in a comic. Carver showed how lacking language is when it comes to truly describing love, and he showed how little we really understand about it. My piece seeks to use visual art as a way to reflect on love.
The story centers around the topic of love and what it is or is not. This theme particularly hit home with me because I obsessed over what exactly love is. I spent years of my life painfully searching for what it was, trying to satisfy the incessant questions in my own head. Eventually I realized that love is impossible to characterize, and my comic represents this conclusion. What We Talk About When We Talk About Love is a rumination of what love is but resolves with the acceptance of love’s abstract form. If language cannot properly describe love, perhaps art can.
