"Engage the Arts" Video Exhibition
Arts Scholars is a non-major specific program built around a cohort of scholars with a varied and deep appreciation for the arts. During their Autumn 2020 semester, first-year Arts Scholars were tasked with overcoming especially unique obstacles – many that were out of everyone’s control. Despite these challenges, they came together in small groups to create final project videos that blended elements of first-year seminar discussions, workshops, and virtual tours with their own artistic identities. The following Engage the Arts videos were voted by their peers to represent their collective efforts to contest the parameters of our times. We hope you enjoy them!

U.S.S. Baker, West Wing

Three incompatible astronauts aboard the U.S.S. Baker accidentally lock themselves in the West Wing storage closet, and must figure out how to unlock the door before they tear each others’ throats out.
This video was a short introductory exploration of film inspired by the close resemblance of the creative processes of both film and comics. Both the film techniques used, and the plot were inspired by Stevenson’s life-long love of comics.
2020: A Horror Film

We can all agree that 2020 has been a hard year, and our group wanted to create a short film that embodied a few of the unexpected horrors that have affected people’s lives this year. We hope that this horror spoof can give you a good laugh. May the rest of this year find you all in good health, high spirits, and Karen free!
The Beauty of Art (An Explore the Arts Project)

Throughout this video, we wanted to capture the beauty of art. What this is, is different to many people, but to us, beauty comes from all angles. We wanted to truly show that all forms of art, whether it be dance, music, editing, drawing, etc. can work together. No matter how different they may be, they can make something truly beautiful. So, we chose to make this video to show the beauty of art all coming together. A stool cannot be complete without all of its legs, just as art cannot fully be appreciated when only viewed through one lens, whether that be one of a traditional artist, a director, or a musician. If more people in the world looked through different lenses to understand what makes art so beautiful, we believe that the world would be a better place.

The world is changing a lot these days, but it’s important to remember that it’s always been like this in some way or another. Otherwise, you’re liable to get overwhelmed. Our video discusses these changes, and what they mean to not only the people who benefit from them, but to the people that champion them.
Chihuly’s Colors

As a group, we found ourselves absolutely fascinated with the work of Dale Chihuly. A renowned glass blower who has created beautifully vibrant collages seen across the United States. We were particularly intrigued by his varying use of color and the different emotions that those colors can invoke. With all of us coming from different arts backgrounds, we decided to portray these colorful emotions in our own way through music, dance, collage, and film.
Hybrid Arts Lab is a multi-venue teaching lab that experiments with how art is imagined, made, viewed and understood within physical and digital spaces. Venues include Hopkins Hall Gallery, Stillman Hall Tent, and online @ UAS from Home.
