The Art in the House exhibition displays an eclectic array of artwork produced by children participating in the Greater Columbus Arts Council's Art in the House program. Using the Frank Museum of Otterbein College's Ceremonial Objects & West African Artifacts exhibition as a point of inspiration, the young artists worked with the support of four master teaching artists to create works of art that are directly influenced by cultural objects from around the world.
About the Art in the House Program:
Master teaching artists, working with younger apprentice artists, provide educational arts programming to hundreds of children ages 5-11 at settlement house sites in the Art in the House program per year, for a cumulative total of nearly 4,000 program contacts. Through these programs, youth make connections to creative thinking, leadership, and lifelong learning through the arts and learn from experienced Columbus-based master artists. Program sites for Art in the House programming include Central Community House, South Side Settlement House, St. Stephens Community House, Gladden Community House, and Clintonville-Beechwold Community Resources Center.
Venues for public exhibitions of Art in the House participants' work in 2010 included COSI, the main branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Franklin County Courthouse Building, and the Rhodes Tower State Office Building.
The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) produces the Art in the House program, and partners with the TRANSIT ARTS program (ages 12-21) and the Columbus Federation of Settlements, sharing funding, human resources, supplies, space, knowledge and experience.
GCAC's Community Arts Education programs are financially assisted by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.
