How do composers of Western art music convey drama, allegory, gesture, emotion, and more? How can listeners understand the meanings in these works of music? Students from the OSU Spring 2022 course “Music’s Meanings” share their interpretative projects in this series of interactive online essays.
For their final projects in the OSU course "MUSIC 6645 Music's Meanings," students created interactive essays explaining the meanings in Western art music. During the course, they studied works by a range of composers including J.S Bach, Clara Schumann, Georges Bizet, and Florence Price; for their final projects, students chose pieces dating from the 1600s to 2019. In these essays, students explain some of the many ways composers of Western art music convey drama, allegory, gesture, emotion, and more.
