Image
An image representing the "Trace Layer Play." A digital image of a white writing space is filled with the words trace, layer, and play that are overlapping. Some words are typed and some are hand-written in black, green and red. There are several organic lines that lead throughout the image connecting the words to one another.

trace layer play

On view at Hopkins Hall Gallery

trace layer play is an immersive research incubator hosted by members of the Department of Arts Administration, Education, and Policy first-year Ph.D. cohort. trace layer play is designed to identify, visualize, and chart their research trajectories as a group. Through mapping, inductive and deductive reasoning, and material-led thinking processes, these researchers will articulate their research trajectories as they are situated within a larger research community. The title, trace layer play, illuminates the active process of delineating, overlapping, and connecting ideas.

trace: leaving a trace, tracing to reveal a history, and locating pattern.
layer: stacking and overlapping materials, excavating, and accumulation.
play: unfixed parts continuously change through interaction, seeking out the potential for generating new connections and forms.

This collaborative project will transform Hopkins Hall Gallery into a laboratory for developing socially dynamic and paradigm-shifting research. Recordings of dialog, sonic interventions, viewer remote and analog input will be layered into the installation. Individual research maps can trace, layer, and play when they become material, in an immersive, collaborative, and corporeal space. Researchers engage their thinking process using visualization strategies with a goal of developing ideas for their dissertation topics in quickly changing and unpredictable times.

trace layer play is presented in partnership with Urban Arts Space's Hybrid Arts Lab, a multi-venue learning lab that experiments with how art is imagined, made, viewed and understood.
