Fergus Fellow: Samantha Parker Salazar, Malleable Matrices
Reception: Saturday, January 24, 2015, 5-7PM Pushing traditional printmaking techniques to their limits, Samantha Parker Salazar constructs intricate cut-paper installations. Inspired by hours of meditation, her work focuses on the obsessive layering of surface imagery and stylized motifs. A vortex of cut forms and vibrant hues, the physical manipulation of paper gives the conceptual power of beauty, destruction, and potential to simple material. A recipient of the John F. Fergus Family Fellowship, Salazar is a printmaking lecturer at The Ohio State University, and received her MFA from The University of Texas at Austin in 2014. Exhibited both nationally and internationally, Salazar will be a resident artist at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium in Summer of 2015. Funded by the John Fergus Family Fund, these annual, internationally competitive fellowships in the Department of Art offer emerging post-MFA artists the opportunity to have a studio, teach, lecture and exhibit at Ohio State. Their presence and participation in the Department enriches the experience of students in all areas of studio-based practice. The John Fergus Family Fund was established with gifts from John C. and Elizabeth O. Fergus, and Robert H. Fergus in honor of their mother, Edith Fergus-Gilmore. It is the strong belief of the family, and the overriding philosophy of these awards, that it is important to give back to one's community. Special thanks goes to Dr. Angelika Nelson and her team at The Ohio State University Museum of Biological Diversity for providing assistance with Salazar's work.
