Artists: Miranda Holmes, Hannah Parrett, Kristen Phipps
If, And, With is a collaborative effort shared by 3 painters responding to each other’s work. Loosely using the framework of Josef Albers’ systematic explorations of color relationships, Holmes, Parrett, and Phipps worked in sequence, handing off the start of a drawing or painting to the next artist in line until it circulated to all three. The resulting content is as surprising to the viewer as it is to the artists themselves. Like a grammatical conjunction, the work reflects what happens if we join our practices together, and we erase, scrap, and paint over what is given, with the intention of creating unexpected relationships.
